First Annual Boston Beach Clean-up Prepares Local Beaches for the Busy Summer Ahead

Boston, MA – On Sunday, June 10th, the Harpoon Brewery’s community service program, Harpoon Helps, will join forces with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay to beautify three Boston beaches at the 1st Annual “Harpoon Helps Save the Harbor Save the Bay.” The clean-up will take place in conjunction with Senator Jack Hart’s annual community beach clean-up and will be assisted by the Commonwealth’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).

Approximately 100 volunteers are expected to help spruce up three beaches in the brewery’s South Boston neighborhood, including Pleasure Bay, Savin Hill, and Tenean Beach. Volunteers will rake, weed, and assist in general clean-up using equipment provided by DCR. Staff from the Harpoon Brewery, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Senator Hart’s office, and the DCR will be on hand at each of the beaches.

“We’re thrilled to partner with our longtime friends at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay and Senator Hart and his constituents for this beach clean-up,” says Dan Kenary, Harpoon Brewery President and President of the Boston Marine Park Business Association. “We started the brewery on Boston’s waterfront 21 years ago, and we’ve seen firsthand the dramatic improvements in the bay as a result of their hard work. Not only do we want to clean our beaches, but we hope to create awareness about the importance of maintaining the harbor and bay so we can enjoy them for many years to come.” Kenary also serves as a board member and as treasurer of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay.

Volunteers will meet at the Harpoon brewery on Sunday morning, and then disperse to their beach clean-up location (Pleasure Bay, Savin Hill, or Tenean Beach). Zipcar has donated hybrid vehicles and drivers to transport volunteers to the beach. Once the cleaning is complete, volunteers and community members are invited back to the brewery for a celebratory gathering with pizza and Harpoon beer and sodas.

Harpoon started the Harpoon Helps program in March of 2003. It is a program aimed to help those in need in communities throughout New England by arranging group volunteer opportunities and through charitable donations. Harpoon Helps is made up of Harpoon Brewery staff and Friends of Harpoon (a customer loyalty program). Each year Harpoon donates thousands of dollars and many barrels of beer to New England charities.  On June 2nd, Harpoon raised $45,000 for the Angel Fund through their annual 5-Miler brewery road race.

Founded in 1986, the Harpoon Brewery distributes its products throughout the Northeast. The Brewery’s line of craft beer features six year-round beers, including its signature Harpoon IPA, and four special seasonal selections. In June 2000, the Harpoon Brewery purchased a second brewery in Windsor, Vermont to keep up with the growing demand for Harpoon. And in April 2002, the brewery introduced a new line of handcrafted sodas, Harpoon Draft Sodas.
