Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Frankenfest

Type :Announcements

October 19, 2006 (Boston, MA) — The latest installment of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series was created and brought to life by Harpoon brewer Mike Smith. Smith originally brewed a small batch of Frankenfest for a beer festival held in Boston several years ago. It was given the name Frankenfest because Smith used small amounts of other Harpoon beers (IPA, Dark, and Octoberfest) to brew the batch. The resulting beer was enjoyed so much that it has been resurrected as the latest offering in Harpoon's 100 Barrel Series line of beers.

Frankenfest was brewed in the tradition of classic German Oktoberfest lagers. In order to replicate the complex malt character of the original, a blend of 8 different malts was used. The beer was judiciously hopped with three different varieties of hops which lend just enough bitterness to balance out the rich malt flavors. The German lager yeast and an extended period in the brewery’s conditioning tanks give it a dry finish.

The lingering malt complexity and dry finish make Frankenfest a wonderful match with many types of food. Smith recommends pairing it with roasted meat, sausages, or other hearty Autumnal fare. The Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Frankenfest is now available in New England.

Harpoon introduced the 100 Barrel Series in May of 2003. 100 Barrel Series beers are brewed in single, 100-barrel batches at the brewery’s Vermont facility. Each beer in the series is created by a different Harpoon brewer - from developing the recipe to the actual brewing process.
