ABOUT HARPOON BREWERY

  • The Harpoon Brewery was founded on the Boston waterfront in 1986 by three Harvard classmates. The Brewery started with the three founders and one employee (a brewer); today there are about 90 employees. (more on Harpoon's History)
  • In New England, Harpoon's annual beer production is second only to Anheuser-Busch and is greater than any other New England specialty brewer.
  • In October 1997, the Brewery installed a new state-of-the-art bottling line in Boston ensuring the freshest tasting beer.
  • In its 1982-1997 ranking, Modern Brewery Age lists Harpoon Brewery as the nation's 11th largest specialty beer producer.
  • Each of Harpoon's 120-barrel unitanks holds 3,720 gallons of beer, which is 29,760 pints.
  • The Brewery hosts at least five festivals each year. In 2005, more than 25,000 beer lovers attended these seasonal special events.

 

ABOUT HARPOON BEERS
  • Harpoon Ale was the first beer to be commercially brewed and bottled in Boston since 1964. (more on Harpoon beer styles)
  • Boston's Sevens Ale House and Doyle's Cafe were the first establishments to serve Harpoon Beer.
  • Harpoon IPA, the Brewery's most popular beer, started out as a summer seasonal beer in 1993. Customers quickly demanded that the beer become available at all times. In 1994, Harpoon IPA became a year-round beer.
  • Diamonds, inspired by the traditional design of Munich's Oktoberfest, are a constant theme running throughout the packaging and point-of-sale (POS) material of Harpoon's family of beers. All of Harpoon's packaging uses flowers, plants, or other seasonally appropriate designs.
  • Henry the Harpooner, the original mariner found on the first bottles of Harpoon, is the silhouette image and seal of quality found on every bottle of the Harpoon family of beers.

  • The average American annually consumes 47.3 gallons of soda, 26.5 gallons of coffee, and 23.1 gallons of beer.
  • The growth of the specialty (craft or micro) beer segment has resulted in more breweries in the US than any other country in the world.
  • All beers can be classified into two style categories, Ales and Lagers. The yeast is the main difference between the two. Ales, fermented at warmer temperatures, use an ale yeast that often yields a fruity aroma and flavor. Lagers, fermented at cooler temperatures, use lager yeast that create smooth, crisp, and clean-tasting beers.
