Recently, Dr. Robert H. Brown Jr, and the Day Neuromuscular Research Lab at UMASS Medical have seen significant accomplishments in their program to discover new ALS genes. We have reported finding two new genes whose mutations cause familial ALS.
ALS (or Lou Gherig’s disease) is a fatal neuro-degenerative disease characterized by muscle weakness and a progressive wasting and paralysis of the muscles.
