Type :Announcements

Boston, MA (December 2007) – It has been a winning year for Boston’s Harpoon Brewery. In 2007 Harpoon, the largest craft brewer in New England, brought home 3 Gold Medals to Boston from two international beer competitions: The European Beer Star and the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival. The brewery’s flagship beer, Harpoon IPA, took home Gold Medals in the India Pale Ale style category at both festivals. Harpoon’s fall seasonal, Octoberfest, won a Gold Medal at the European Beer Star in the Oktoberfest category, which is a style that originated in Germany. This was the first year Harpoon entered beers into these competitions.

Held annually in Nuremburg, Germany, the European Beer Star Award is considered one of the most prestigious beer in the industry. The 2007 competition included entries from 23 countries in 40 different categories. An independent jury of brewers from all over the world judged the beers in a blind tasting. Category winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony on November 15th in Nuremburg. Harpoon Senior Vice President Charlie Storey attended the ceremony to accept the Gold Medals on the brewery’s behalf.

The Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival is a 6-day event held each year in September. More than 1,200 different beers were featured at the 2007 festival, with 12 different beer categories in the competition. Harpoon will be presented with their Gold Medal from the Stockholm competition at the annual Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego in April 2008.

“It is a tremendous honor to have our beers recognized with three Gold Medals at these respected European competitions,” says Rich Doyle, Harpoon’s CEO and co-founder.  “We started brewing here in Boston 21 years ago to make great beer that we love, so it is very rewarding when a panel of our peers acknowledges something that has been our passion for so many years.”

In addition to the European competitions, Harpoon won Gold Medals at the Great International Beer Competition in Providence, RI. Harpoon Octoberfest was awarded a Gold Medal in the Oktoberfest category, and the brewery’s year-round beer, UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen, won a Gold Medal in the Fruit/Spiced Ale category. The brewery’s newest year-round offering, Harpoon Cider, won a silver medal in the Cider category. Harpoon won a Gold Medal at every beer competition they entered in 2007.
