Few games are as beautifully simple as Stump. The goal of Stump is to flip a hammer in the air and then, in one motion, drive your opponents' nails into a tree stump. If your nail gets hit, you enjoy a sip of beer.
So simple, yet so entertaining! New to the game? Check out our video and read below on how you can make this the next big hit at your summer shindig!
What you'll need:
Large stump or log (about knee height). Live in the city, find a round wheel from Home Depot!
Hammer with a grip (either painted on or rubber)
Box of Nails (about 4” or 5” long)
Lots of beer
At least one friend, but the more the better
Set up:
Have each player grab a nail and hammer it into the stump just deep enough so it stands upright. The nails should be arranged equidistant in a circle.
How to play:
Each player tries, one at a time, to hit an opponent’s nail into the stump after flipping the hammer 360 degrees and then catching it. The transition from flip to hit must be seamless—swing the hammer from wherever you catch it. No choking up or down on the handle. You hit the nail? That player drinks. You drop the hammer or miss? You drink. When a player’s nail is fully embedded into the log, they drink and are eliminated. Last nail standing wins. If someone’s nail becomes bent, they can straighten it. And be nice and hold the stump steady while they do.
