We had an amazing day on Sunday, May 20th at our 17th Annual Harpoon 5-Miler presented by Reebok! Over 4500 runners, 300 volunteers, and hundreds of spectators helped us raise close to a quarter of a million dollars for The Angel Fund, which supports critical ALS research by Dr. Robert Brown and his team at UMASS Medical Center. This was one of our favorite Harpoon 5-Milers EVER, and we couldn't have done it without everyone who joined us in this important fight. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
Our friend Rich Kennedy, president of The Angel Fund, best summed up the day: “We achieved the Triple Crown today: successful fundraising, a competitive race field, and a heck of a party!”
He couldn’t have been more right…
On the fundraising front, we raised $245,400.00 (and counting!) for The Angel Fund. Patrick Daly was our largest individual fundraiser, raising $3,000 (and climbing!) in honor of his uncle, Jim Daly. Team Michael won their third straight Scott Carlson Award, raising $25,815.00 in honor of Erica’s father, Michael Southerland. To date, they’ve raised over $100,000 for The Angel Fund since their captain Erica Southerland first ran in 2012. Congrats again Patrick, Erica, and Team Michael!
On the competitive front, the race saw a record number of elite runners this year, many of whom finished the 5 mile race in under 25 minutes. Man, you guys are fast! We were thrilled to have runners from Reebok, Tracksmith Hare AC, and The Heartbreakers on the podium this year. This race is for everyone, no matter what pace--- but it sure was fun to our winners crush those 5 miles. Race results are posted on coolrunning.com. Congratulations to all of our winners — and to every single runner for a race well run!
And yes, we definitely threw a heck of a party: We poured 115 kegs of beer (over 12,000 beers!), stuffed our faces with Kayem and Bertucci’s, and danced the afternoon away to the sounds of DJ Steve Greco!
We raise a glass to all of you, and we can’t wait to see you next year!
