On August 19, 2014, I met this guy for our first date at the Washington Square Tavern in Brookline. This place rotates taps quite a bit so I didn’t know what they’d have on tap when I got there but was delighted to see Citra Victorious on tap! I was on the team that brewed this winning beer for Harpoon’s annual Kettle Cup, an internal brewing competition. It had been a fun summer talking about it and seeing it around town with my name and face on the back label. I got to the bar first, so I ordered a Citra Victorious at the bar while I waited for my date to arrive.
When he got there, he asked what I was drinking and I told him. Then hesitatingly, I added (because I didn’t want to seem boastful or obnoxious): “I’m actually one of the brewers of this beer. We won an internal homebrew competition and the prize is that your beer gets to go to market.”
He was impressed, and lucky for him, did the right thing and ordered one. We had a great date, hung out for a couple more “Citra Vic’s” and when I got home, he emailed me right away and asked to hang out again.
Things have worked out well for us, as we’ve been drinking beer together for 2 years now, and are getting married next summer! (that's us above on the night we got engaged, crushing Take 5's!) have a bottle of Citra Victorious on a shelf in our kitchen. Not only because that was the one time I’ve had my name on a beer, but also because it’s the beer we both had when we met.
However, he loves to tell the story that I purposely took him to the one bar in my neighborhood that had “my beer” on tap so I could show off and brag about it. Which I didn’t! ;)
