Drink Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October 1, 2020

Employee owner and breast cancer survivor Kathy Pruett shares the meaning behind this year’s breast cancer awareness month program.

As an employee owner at MBBC, there are many things that make me proud to work here; Harpoon IPA for starters, but our charitable arm, Harpoon Helps is at the top.  Our commitment to supporting community and its people is at the core of who we are. This was most evident for me when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2011, after 10 years working here. The outpouring of love and support was incredible. Everyone helped keep my spirits high, while dealing with chemo and everything that comes with a cancer diagnosis, over the course of a year.

Fast forward 10 years, and here I am cancer free, and thriving with a new-found appreciation for life, and dedicated to paying it forward to love/support/mentor other sisters still in the fight, for the second, and even third time.

This year, for Breast Cancer Awareness month,  I asked that we support research on Stage IV or metastatic breast cancer (MBC), which is cancer that has spread to other parts of the  body, including the lungs, liver, bones and brain.  Stage IV MBC patients live, on average 18-36 months after diagnosis, yet only 2-5% of research dollars are focused on treatments for these patients; and its estimated 42 thousand will lose their battle this year. I have lost several friends to MBC, and have 3 girlfriends fighting right now, so what better way to honor their journey than to help raise awareness and funds for more research, to help transition MBC from a terminal illness to a controlled, chronic condition.

So this October, remember those still fighting the fight, and help support the cause while enjoying a pint of Harpoon Dragonweisse, at either one of our breweries, where we will be donating $1/pint to Metavivor Research and Support, Inc. Can’t make it in for a pint? Click here to donate.

Love Beer. Love Life. Harpoon

Kathy

METAvivor Research and Support Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for women and men with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and funding research to transition MBC from a terminal illness to a controlled, chronic condition.
